Medical Writers create the clinical, regulatory, and scientific documents that pharmaceutical companies, CROs, and medical communications agencies need to develop drugs, gain regulatory approval, and communicate evidence to healthcare professionals and patients.

The clinician whose writing was always a cut above. The nurse who drafted the clearest patient education materials on the unit. The pharmacist who wrote the best drug monographs for P&T committee. The clinician colleagues turned to for editing, proofreading, or help structuring a case report. If you naturally translate complex medical concepts into clear, structured prose, this role is a direct extension of what you already do.

Work Setting

Highly flexible and remote-friendly. Medical writing is one of the most location-independent roles in health tech. Full-time positions at pharma companies and CROs are typically 80 to 100% remote. Freelance medical writing is a well-established business model, allowing clinicians to start taking projects while still in clinical practice. Medical communications agencies may require occasional in-person meetings for large projects, but most work is delivered remotely.

Freelance demand increased 50% during the pandemic and has not contracted. Every clinical trial generates regulatory documents, every drug launch requires medical education content, and every health system needs patient-facing materials. The supply of qualified medical writers is not keeping pace with demand.

Reality Check

Medical writing is one of the few health tech roles where your writing portfolio matters more than certifications. Hiring managers and clients want to see writing samples that demonstrate clarity, accuracy, and regulatory awareness. That said, AMWA certificates signal commitment to the profession and provide structured learning that accelerates your transition. The MWC credential is the only exam-based certification and carries the most weight.
